Post-harvest treatment of ethrel (dipping in ethrel solution and exposing to ethylene gas) and potassium permanganate (dipping only) at 500, 1000 and 1500 ppm were given separate'y to Dwarf Cavendish banana fruits to study their effect on ripening shelf life and quality. Early ripening and colour development were observed in fruits treated with ethrel 1500 ppm. (in both dip and exposing to gass methods). On the other hand delayed ripening and prolonged shelf life of fruits was observed with potassium permanganate 1500 ppm. Minimum weight loss of fruits in storage was noticed in both ethrel and potassium permanganate treated fruits at 1500 ppm. Rotting of fruits was delayed with potassium permanganate 1500 ppm. Pulp to skin weight ratio and quality traits (TSS,total sugar and Brix acid ratio) were improved in fruits treated with ethrel 1500 ppm. |
